Mont Blanc du Tacul

Mont Blanc du Tacul

Mt Blanc du Tacul north-west face 31-07-2005. The large serac and snow avalanche that has killed an UK soldier of a group of 6 lask week (07/26/2005 at 4PM). Not all the seracs have fallen that day and are still ready to fall. It is possible to have more snow avalanches in that face because there is a very bad layer of snow under the 30 cm of good and solid (when it's cold) snow. It can become dangerous every time after noon when the sun is coming in front of the face, and be again very dangerous if there are some hots days again. If never you are going to the dangerous place, avoid to be directly exposed to the seracs, and take care of the big crevasses (some are 15m wide and covered with snow bridge) there are arround the place, on the right of the picture. Some people have still been killed there in June by an avalanche. And some have had the chance to stay alive even after been caught in an avalanche in the last 2 month. 07/2005
