Monument on Wyżna Pass

Monument on Wyżna Pass

In August 2011 a new monument was built on Wyżna Pass in the Bieszczady Mountains. It was dedicated to the victims of mountains and the search and rescue members who gave aid to them. The monument is standing in the vicinity of the tourist trail which has been used by thousands of hikers going to the top of Mount Polonina Wetlińska. Even though Bieszczady are gentle mountains 100 hikers have died here within the last fifty years. Mount Wetlinska Meadow - Our hike – September 17, 2011. The Bieszczady Mountains – Poland

Interesting monument

Does sudden bad weather cause the deaths?

Re: Interesting monument

Most of them died from hypothermia, lightning strikes or heart attacks. Greetings Henryk

Re: Interesting monument

Thanks for the information Henry! I can understand where people would not expect danger on such beautiful rolling mountains! Cheers to you both! Kathy
