Today was one of the warmest day this week and if not for the 15 mph wind would have been toasty when on the move. Did the standard route; had my eye on the glacier route for next time
Taking advantage of little snow so far this season, I drove up to Tioga Pass and hiked the mostly dry Mt. Dana on a cold and windy - but otherwise beautiful day.
First 13'000 peak...nice easy climb
Nice weather. Pretty easy.
Moved to California and started grad school at Berkeley in fall 1983 -- spent the last weekend before classes in Yosemite, including climbing Dana.
Despite a horrible cold and strep throat I made the summit on our second attempt. I was not ready to leave Yosemite until I saw the much talked about views from the top. The day before afternoon storms prevented us from making the summit, so we got up extra early to make the hike before the long drive back to southern California. The views were beyond worth it! The climb would have been a walk in the park if I wasn't so sick, but definitely a fun hike with all the scrambling!
Climbed Dana Couloir with SMG, but descended the back side instead of the loose climb to the top.
Great route with stunning views of Tioga and Conness on the way up & Lake Mono and Lyell on the summit. Encountered 3-4 snowfields on the way up; had fun glissading down these on the way back.
Good climb. Simul climbed most of the route.
Still kind of soft from the warm weather, but I found some exposed glacial ice and styrofoam for a bit of fun.
Climbed via the Dana Couloir, perfect snow conditions and a beautiful clear sunny day
Fun times getting my lungs back.
Clear skies, no wind, just perfect!
Hiked with Jean. Thunderstorm started at 10:30am after we summited at 9:50am.
Fun hike on the 4th. Still a lot of snow up there.
Solo of Dana couloir in spring..sometime in May
Cramponed up the northwest slopes, then skied down to Dana Couloir. Great descent down the couloir, then over to the Plateau for an even better descent of Ellery Bowl. Hitchhiked back to the pass.
In September, 1978. From Tioga Lake up Glacier Canyon and then Dana Plateau via craggy highpoint and then a traverse of Dana summit back to car. Climbed again on 7/23/88 from Mono TH.
Lots of boulder hopping. Fun:)
