Garfield Trail Route  Sucess!

#1 09-14-24 Solo. Strong easterly winds up to the first plateau. This trail is nothing if not steep - be prepared to grind it out. One of the first trails I've climbed on which the lower one third is barren and then one begins to find vegetation. The trail was, for me, difficult to follow in several places; I was glad to have the All Trails app to help me get back on track. There is some mild exposure during an extended traverse after the second plateau. A beautiful American flag waving atop a 25-foot flagpole beckons one to the true summit. Peak #78 in my 80in80 quest.

Early morning start  Sucess!

Visiting my son, Broc, his wife, Jenn, and 11 month old Finn. Got up at 4:00 am and hit the trail by 4:45. Quick ascent up and back down before breakfast. Beautiful views once the sun gave me enough light to see! Steep.

via Mt Garfield trail  Sucess!

Didn't spend a lot of time on top - I could see the showers approaching. Rain/hail caught up with me; clay trail became like grease. Didn't bother the 3 horses I saw on one of the platforms the trail passes through.

Garfield  Sucess!

I've climbed here many times since the first time and it is probably my favorite. Driving there is a ritual and getting there before anyone else (when possible) is always a plus.

Mt Garfield Trail  Sucess!

Crappy high country weather chased us out to the desert this weekend. I've driven past this ruggedly handsome peak so many times it was time to pay the summit a visit. Nice and steep as soon as we left the Jeep. Loved the sweeping views from high on the plateau. Hung out on the summit for over and hour just taking it in!

Great for Sunsets  Sucess!

Mount Garfield Trail  Sucess!

1st: 4/25/10; Nice trail and views! Although even at 11am in late April this was a warm hike, definitely wouldn't want to climb this one on a summer afternoon.
2nd: 11/4/17; With Rachael up the Garfield trail.

Great little trail  Sucess!

Great little trail, short but steep. Nice elevation gain for getting ready for bigger mountains. Little hard on the knees coming down, but the experience and views are worth the pain!

Mt. Garfield  Sucess!

All around wonderful mountain packed with exciting formations and breath-taking (literally) approaches! I've utilized mt. garfield for the past six months as a conditioning tool and have developed a healthy respect for its numerous different and interesting approaches. I recommend trying one of the many many many different alternate routes that exist!

Standard  Sucess!

2,000ft in 2 miles. It'll definately get you sweating. Especially when it's 80 frickin degrees out!
From the summit, I can see why they're called the Book Cliffs. Beautiful views of the Grand Valley.

Mt Garfield Trail  Sucess!

Climbed this with my youngest son. He wasn't in the right frame of mind when we first started but I believe he enjoyed it as much as I did at the end. Tremendous views! They were replacing the flag while we were on the summit. They told us the pole commemorated Vietnam Veterans of the Grand Junction area.
