Windy  Sucess!

Low visibility; lots of wind. Trail was packed through deep snow, to about 5,000 feet, then tracks disappear. The summit snow was hard packed. Did it in showshoes (only a few patches of ice). Too much westerly wind to do Gray, as planned, but we then went on to do Tabletop.

Wind & Rain  Sucess!

Another day, another highpoint. Our lust for the summit caused us to ignore the rangers trail "closure" and go for the peak. Strong wind and rain was the problem. Many downed trees - some blew down after we passed them on the way up. Anyway, we made it, and it was fun.

sweet revenge, served cold  Sucess!

Easier hike than I've come to expect from the 'Dacks. Mostly cloudy and windy, the way winter should be.
Nice to stand on the summit after stopping short on my August Great Range traverse.

1ST ADK 46ER  Sucess!

1st hike of any real distance. As a novice hiker it was grueling but well worth the effort. 1 down, 45 to go!!!

Marcy from South Meadows rd.  Sucess!

We did Marcy on 11-25-2006 from South Meadows road. From Indian falls, it was an Icy path and cascade of ice for about 40% of the path to the top. We had a great time on that day. We will come back in winter.

years ago  Sucess!

Actually went up 10 times between 1970 and 1975. Backpacked over the top twice. There used to be lean-tos 0.7 and 1.2 miles from the top on the Van Hovenberg side, and there was a lean-to at Lake Tear.

One of the most memorable times was in June 1971, when we went over the top, up Skylight (which I loved) and then out over Gray, and through hip-deep snow back to the Van Hovenberg trail.

Really Long Hike  Sucess!

Hiked up in a snowstorm. It was quite an epic trying to find the peak without a map and limited views.

Van Hoevenberg  Sucess!

The summit was cold, windy, and clouded in so we didn't have any views and we didn't stay up there very long. Oh well, still a great mountain.

Van Hoevenberg  Sucess!

It was raining but we went anyway! My friend and I hiked the Van Hoevenberg Trail to the top. We met a nice guy from Ottawa on the trail who hiked the rest of the way up with us. Cold, rainy, and extremely windy at the summit. Didn't stay at the top for long! Soggy, wet, and cold, but HP #21!

Tough early winter hike from the Loj  Sucess!

Great hike but I felt brutal! I had harly slept for 9 months - new baby :) - and had the flu. I thought I was going to die. Still worth it though. To top it off the State Troopers pulled me over for speeding (5 over the limit) just as my legs finally rebelled and cramped to punish me for the day I'd given them.

All the way from the Loj  Sucess!

Climbed from the Loj on a day hike. My compliments to the trail crews who obviously spent a lot of time working on the trail. Was stuck in the clouds on yet another summit. #23 on my state highpoint list

Rain for 18 consecutive hours!  Sucess!

We went to Marcy campsite, no directions, no clue about New England mountains. A nice guy from Lake Placid directed us to a free campsite off of South Meadow Road. We started the hike early in the morning and reached the windy, foggy, awesome top about five hours later. Then the rain started. It rained for 18 straight hours, and the descent from the summit made for a slow, slippery experience. Exhausted but proud, we finished New York's highpoint 8.5 hours after starting.

Marcy via Van Ho; John's Brook  Sucess!

Actually, I've climbed Marcy thrice - once long ago as a Boy Scout, and soloed it twice so far in 2006 (Mid-March with Skylight/Gray from the Loj, and May as part of a Great Range traverse from the Garden).

Mount Marcy

8th of 8 highpoints in 48 hrs. and thats including delaware. fell into snow up to my waist in late may, so be prepared. and if you leave before its light, pay close attention to the signs. we took a wrong turn about 100 yds in and wandered around on cross-country ski trails for an hour.

Koonsy - Jul 9, 2006 4:58 pm

Route: Van Hoevenberg

Cold, wet, and turned windy day and the trail had steady running water. As we became more exposed to the wind we played it safe and turned around. Still a pretty fun hike despite a missed summit.
