FYI: Higgins Bald is no longer bald :)
We left ashville to drive up to the top and about half way up I noticed the gas light was on. I new we were already screwed so I just drove to the top so I could get my highpoint in hoping we could find people to help up there. It was a very foggy day and we didn't see anyone until the very top. There was a work truck with a few guys there and they took gas out of a bobcat and siphoned it into our tank to get us to the nearest gas station. How nice of them and how lucky for us!!
Great hike with some great views! Crowded parking at the campground though.
A quick jog up the path to the observation tower. Views were pretty obscured from fires nearby
Super foggy drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Easter Sunday. The summit area is well done.
Nice BRP drive...
Meh. Woods were nice!
It was her 3rd state high point
Tough hike along the Black Mountain Crest Trail. Cold, but good weather. Saw 3 people the whole 4 days out there.
After driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, something everyone might want to consider at least once; the highest point east of the Mississippi was of course irresistible! Started at Stepps Gap to at least make a little hike of it; albeit all on road or trail. The eastern mountains have a charm all their own.
Summit #4 of 6 (TN, GA, SC, NC, VA & KY) that we ended up completing with a total time of:
36 hours, 52 minutes and 30 seconds.
Great hike from Blac Mountain campground. Camped on Commissary Ridge. Lots of ice on last 1000'. Beautiful
Perfect weather and stunning views from the top. In my travels to State High Points, I began to realize that most of the fun isn't standing on top, but the wonderful sights on the back roads as I travelled to the summits
Made it to the top in 2 hours and 20 min. Solo hike. Came down on the old trail. Uneventful. The only scenery was at the top.
Been to the top many, many times but this was the hike that officially checked it off my SB6K list...#20, halfway through! Climbed along with 9 mile loop including Gibbes, Hallback, and Craig.
Fun climb of the highest peak east of the Mississippi.
Arrived at the summit a few minutes before park opening. Peaceful and views outstanding. Start of a long epic day.
Blue Ridge PW closed between Asheville and Mt. Mitchell. By the time I circled around it was late. Ranger waiting by the gate. I was the only visitor there. Ran the short trail to the summit and back.
