About a month after my first HP trip to the E/NE that got me #s 4-12...It's time for another trip E to NC, but I took a S/SE side trip to get a bunch more HPs. (HP 7 of 7 during this trip). Kind of sketchy but beautiful drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Parked near the visitors center and took the 1.5 mile hike up. Amazing views, cool platform and display area. Could not find the USGS marker.
Ran/hiked 7 mile loop in late afternoon finishing at summit via Big Tom and Mount Craig.
Beautiful views from the top of Mount Mitchell and some great nature on the way up, and some cool shots of the clouds floating above the surrounding valleys!
Parked two miles from the summit and took the old mitchell trail up- impressive pine forests. Unfortunately no views at top due to thick fog after the previous night's train but glad to get the highest peak in the East.
Gorgeous drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and to the top. An evening summit and the fog was lifting. Beautiful, calm and quiet at the top. Saw mama bear and 2 cubs on the drive.
Had a nice hike to the summit on a beautiful early spring day. Highpoint #14 for me.
This is the 3rd of 8 Highpoints on this trip.
Mt. Mitchell is the highest elevation East of the Mississippi River. It is a well developed highpoint that is accessible for everyone with a paved walkway. Visitor Center is COVID closed.
Great hike. Peaked with Leah (my awesome wife), Dave, Kat, Rico, Di, Rich and Laura. First peak and many more to come. Trail was great. Unbelievable sights. Foggy at top so couldn’t see anything but it was the peak!!!
Successful to the top, however due to rain and fog we could not see any views.
Biked from Folk Art Center
Long hike. Kind of wet at times.
The driving on the Blue Ridge parkway was the scary part.
A rolling jaunt over 4 6000 footers made for a fun half day in the mountains.
Repeated in 1997
Fifth & final hike of a highpoint and whiskey trail driving vacation. Great hike up the Old Michell Trail. Returned via the Commisary Trail. In hindsight, I would do the loop in reverse.
It was a picture postcard day. Just perfect. The views in the Smokies were just incredible...
Backpacked with a buddy and had our food stolen. was able to summit and catch a cab
I began my hike from the very remote and hard to find Black Mountain Campground. Sleeping in my rooftop tent I could hear the babble of the brook next to my camping spot. The hike to the summit was 12.3 miles round trip and 3,763' elevation gain. Sleep was earned.
Old Mitchell Trail to Buncombe Horse Trail for extra mile out to get view of Mt Mitchell; retrace back to Old Mitchell & complete summit hike. Weather: 0800 39F at hikers parking, 37F at summit 4 hrs later with 25mph wind.
