Definitely a leg burner

Nothing special about climbing/hiking this one from the standard route. However, with approximately 450' of extra up and down in each direction, this hike will wear you out.

Mt. Nebo  Sucess!

Was a beautiful day and couldn't have asked for better weather. Really enjoyed the ridge walk and final stretch of the climb.

North Ridge  Sucess!

Harder than it looks on paper since much of the route is relatively flat. Most of the gain occurs over half the distance. Pretty good views but the hike is mostly dry and not super interesting. After camping at Payson Lake.

Nebo  Sucess!

Melissa and I hiked this for my birthday. It felt like the wildflowers were in their prime, and we spent a lot of time taking pictures. The colors and flowers were really amazing. We enjoyed the last mile to the summit (steep and kind of an adventure). This is a great mountain and I am happy to get the high point of the Wasatch!

Fun Mountain  Sucess!

Mount Nebo Summit near Payson Utah with Denali. It’s the tallest summit in all of the Wasatch Mountain range at about 12,000 feet high. Still a lot of snow with the very steep crossing. Should have brought crampons but I made it without. It’s a very fun mountain. Slid on my butt down an old avalanche chute. The weather was perfect. 9 miles round trip and 4000 elevation gain. Why do it the easy way?  Sucess!

I convinced a friend that we should start from Willow Creek and tackle the south, middle, and regular summits in one day. Except I told him we should start from the 5880 foot contour to get the 6000 feet of elevation gain. He worked a graveyard shift and tapped out on the saddle going up to Nebo, I pulled myself up after navigating the scrambly backside. Good views when the clouds weren't obscuring everything. Then the wind started blowing and it got real cold.

There was some avalanche debris we had to contend with on the way up, plus a bunch of downfall along the path. But if you like a good challenge, that's definitely the way to go.

Crown of the Wasatch  Sucess!

Left my sister's house in Grantsville at 5:00 a.m. for this hike. Arrived at the trailhead around 7:45 because Santaquin Canyon was closed due to a mudslide. This was a fantastic hike. No wind. No snow (all of the Wasatch north of Nebo received a few inches the previous day). My bro in law had some altitude troubles but he made it all the way to the top with me. Unfortunately the summit was partially covered in a cloud so I did not get to see the views down to the south. Great peak anyway!

Must have just missed you, came up from the south summit and things just started to clear as I got up

Fun hike  Sucess!

Very fun hike via the normal route. Class 3 scramble to the top, trail peters out on the summit block and its just rocks. My friend Derek got a little nervous and waited for me at the saddle. Very nice view of the valley, Timp, Provo, Utah Lake, etc, from up there. Trail is a crappy hike though, not well maintained and too much up and down.

Summited   Sucess!

Summited via normal route. My first significant peak in the Wasatch, Rockies and west in general. Also my highest elevation and toughest climb so far. Anyway the exposure was not something I was used to but in the end made it more fun.

West side approach  Sucess!

As it was for the day before on Mt. Ellen, getting to the west side trailhead for Nebo can be quite an adventure by itself. I had to walk thirty minutes just to get to the TH because my poor Honda Civic just couldn't go any higher. Four hours and fifty minutes up from the TH and three hours down. Well made trail and another great ridge.

Behemoth Conquered  Sucess!

Climbed it with my father, uncle, and younger brother on Labor Day. Started fairly late--at 12:40--but that wasn't a problem, as it was rather chilly out, along the very pretty trail, with views of our destination from the TH. The trail starts out pretty mellow, meandering down to the base of the North Ridge, then begins its ascent and, shortly afterwards, steepens dramatically. Despite being one of the steepest trails I've ever hiked, we made it all the way to the upper slopes, where the peak once again became visible, then traversed the slopes of the much more gentle North Peak down to the saddle. The trail then steeply climbs to the unofficially-named Wolf Pass Peak, and this is where the route gets interesting. The final summit ridge--which, I might add, is very scenic--starts out fairly simple, but later becomes an exciting but safe Class 3 scramble on fairly solid rock (depending on where you go.) The first crux of our route was a spectacular climb up an obvious rock chute, then a less-difficult second series of small rock bands, then finally the second crux was the scramble up to the summit. Great views were to be had in abundance; though bare, the rather large summit was nothing short of spectacular. Both the second-highest and second-most-prominent peak I've bagged to-date, I was very happy to cross this one off my list at last. We retraced our route in the waning light of the afternoon, then--after finally reaching the bottom after an exceedingly rewarding hike--stopped at the highly recommended Devil's Garden area before heading back home late. Great hike to a fantastic peak, one of my all-time favorites and highly recommended!
