north ridge/other backbone  Sucess!

great day for hiking, a bit hot. Left the sign saying "private road" for Acorn in Wrightwood at 11:40am, hiked up the paved road, up acorn trail to baldy and made it to the top of Mt. Baldy by 2:40pm, tons of peeps on summit. Returned the same way. Tough workout, 7000' elevation gain overall. I would really recommend the north backbone trail, its steep but its not crowded, very desolate and bighorn sheep sightings are common. Unlike the other routes, this one starts from the North (Wrightwood or Guffy Area).

Devils backbone w/ my son  Sucess!

My son's first summit! All though he slept most of the way. He liked climbing on the wind breaks at the top and playing with a stick he found. summits Adam 1 Dad 7

Baldylocks & the Three Ts  Sucess!

Our 3rd Annual. Baldy Village to the peak, down Devil's Backbone to the notch, then up over Thunder, Telegraph and Timber (The Three Ts) and down Icehouse Canyon. The payoff is standing on Telegraph and seeing practically the entire route you took up Baldy a few hours earlier.

Ski Hut Trail  Sucess!

Conditions couldn't be better-wind wasn't bad, sun was out, clear day, etc. Very few patches of snow and none were on the trail itself. The day before was chilly, damp and foggy so I lucked out!

Route Climbed: Ski Hut Route  Sucess!

Good hiking weather, clear with a slight cooling breeze. No snow to the Ski Hut and from there it was patchy and soft to the summit. Easy to traverse in low top boots. The views east and west from summit were spectacular. The desert was hazy and the marine layer was very thick today. Met a couple of good hiking buddies, David and Bob, who set a good pace. Back to the San Antonio Falls parking lot by 1:00.

Great views  Sucess!

Devils Backbone route. Noted a fire to the east which was interesting and the clouds covering L.A. made a great sight.

Climbing the Bowl while sick is no fun!  Sucess!

My girlfriend and I spent nearly 5 hours post-holing our way to the summit through deep soft snow via the Bowl. I was also sick that day, but I wanted to get in the training for doing Whitney. It was pure hell all day, but it was rewarding to have done it.

We passed two guys on our way down who were heading up the Backbone. They were ill-equipped and it was very late in the day. They may have gotten themselves into trouble. We later learned that they rode the chair lifts up without paying and that the resort had called the police on them.

Route Run: Baldy Notch/Devil's Backbone Date Run: Sept. 1, 2003  Sucess!

I've done the Labor Day race known as "Baldy Run to the Top" several times. The last mile up the bald south face in particular will leave you whimpering.

Sierra Club Ski Hut Trail  Sucess!

It was a nice sunny weather that Sunday morning. The forecast for the High Sierra Mountains weather left much to be desired. We had to postpone our climb and as an alternative Mt.Baldy fell as an excellent mountain to test the gear and to get in shape most of the people in our party. The ski down was good with the exception of the numerous rocks that scratched my skies to a great extend. It a good mountain to get everything organized before the real climbing season begins.

April Fools  Sucess!

A slow slog to the top -- but the skiing was superb 'cause we got an early start. Above 9400' the snow was delightful. Lower elevations slushed up considerably by the afternoon...

Winter time

Left at 9am from Manker Flat. Ready for some snow action, I put on my Koflachs and took crampons and snowshoes with me. Until I reached the notch, I didn't need any of them. The trail was nice, with some patches of ice, but otherwise OK. I put on my snowshoes for the Devil's Backbone ridge, the snow was deep there. It was a great winter training worth every step.

Whited out  Sucess!

Call it experience-building. Went up the ski bowl and forgot to check the compass and descended 2000 feet down the wrong side. Nothing to do by ascend back into the storm and go down the right way. It's easy to get messed up sometimes.

Ski-hut trail  Sucess!

Went on what was supposed to be a beautiful day. Partly cloudy in the morning but a blizzard hit just as we reached the summit. See also my trip report:

I hike Baldy regularly as a training hike.
