cdewhurst  Sucess!

2nd time on Baldy this year. Once in March with more snow and this trip with little/no snow. Look forward to glissading down the bowl in the winter and spring.

Great Training Mountain  Sucess!

Baldy Bowl is a great place in the winter for practicing snow skills. Easy to get to and a nice local snow climb. I usually stay away in the summer because it gets soooo crowded.

Complete south ridge  Sucess!

The ridge I am calling the south ridge is the one the ski hut trail finishes on. From Manker Flats, I descended about 100 yards, turned right on the residential road, and slid my way down to the stream bed. Then I groveled up the line of least resistance (which turned out to be a lot of resistance) to the ridge, which I followed to the intersection with the ski hut trail and on to the summit. The ridge (below the intersection) has a wild, untraveled feel, with lots of open rock and the occasional scramble. The total elevation gain is about 4200 feet, and the ascent took me 3.5 hours. I give it a class 2 rating. To my enemies I would recommend the grovel to the ridgeline, and to my friends I would recommend the walk along the ridge.

Great feeling  Sucess!

The air was the most hazy I've seen in a long time, but I had a day off and had been wanting to climb Baldy, so I went for it. The views were obstructed, but the feeling of reaching the top after hiking a rocky trail for 3 hours was greatness!

Yay......I did this hike along with the rest of Southern California!!!

What can I say...it had to be done. I've climbed this about 3 times now. All I can say is I'm glad I'm still alive. Let me tell you...doing this hike with dark clouds rolling in can be hazardous for your health...this is the closest I've ever come to being struck by lightening. The image of a perfectly shaped bolt will forever be ingrained in my mind. I'm glad the devils backbone was merciful that one eventful day!

6 Peaks 8000 Feet  Sucess!

There were a lot of hikers in this section of the trail which is pretty steep. We moved right along amidst the traffic up the bare landscape via many small switchbacks. Mount San Antonio is also known Mount Baldy. Mount Baldy is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains with an elevation of 10,064’. There is no register up there, but there is a giant plaque which I took a picture of. The distance to San Antonio from Mount Harwood is .8 miles, and the elevation gain is 704’. After enjoying the amazing view for awhile we headed over to West Baldy.

Nice day!  Sucess!

Climbed with Faith, in preparation for a Cactus to Clouds bid the next day. It was a challenge just getting out of bed this morning, as I'd only slept about 4 hours after a long drive from the Bay the night before.

Starting from the road (below San Antonio Falls) at 10.26, we made fair time up the road, past the ghetto ski area, & up Devil's Backbone to the summit. Summited around 13.54. Clouds, smog, &/or haze obscured views in all directions, & nearby thunderstorms made us turn around just a few minutes after getting to the top. Regardless, the exposure on this class 1 trail was abnormal & fun, & the views of San Gorgonio & San Jacinto were nice. What a gem in the backyard of LA residents! Took the steep trail down to the chairlift parking on the return, saving at least 15 or 20 minutes, I'd surmise. Got back to the car around 17.00 or so.

Very nice day!

Awesome Memories  Sucess!

Baldy is a gem. I've climbed it at least six times via the ski hut trail, and I first learned to use an ice axe on the bowl. There's nothing like getting up above the clouds or the smog and standing on that summit to make you feel like you're worlds away from the city just below you.
