Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia)

Mountain laurel forms dense thickets of shrubs or small trees in forests of much of the eastern U.S. It has an affinity for rich, acidic soils and older forests. Heavy blooms of this shrub in lush green forests is truly a spectacular sight. Photo from near Warren, Pennsylvania. June 2001
