shortest approach ...

is probably not over Echo Col, at least time-wise. It is faster to start from South Lake and head over Bishop Pass, down to the JMT, and then up to Ladder Lake. This would not be true for peaks further north on the divide such as Black Giant (in which case Echo Col is a better choice).
