Mt. Louis

It is very difficult to take a good photo of Mt.Louis. It is certainly an excellent shot, and best I have seen. Congratulations!

Thanks Peter, Louis is one of the great alpine rocks of the Canadian Rockies.

Re: Astonishing!

Thanks, a fantastic alpine rock climb, the Gmoser route was one of my first in the Canadian Rockies.....the Kane route is the most standard...both worthwhile..cheers

Still my favored photo

Dow, I love your images! -Lots of them!
About 60 years ago there was a metal box at the top of Mt. Louis where everybody left a note, I wonder if it is still there? Cheers

Re: Still my favored photo

Thanks for the kind words Peter. Believe it or not it was when I climbed it some years back. Dave Edgar and I did the Gmoser route. Reading the summit log was like a who's who of climbing. We could not believe how far back it went and that it had not been retired. We sat up there and read it for 30 minutes. Iron cross up there as well as I recall. I am friends with the Banff Museum curator and normally he ends up with any log books that are long in the tooth. Best log book I have ever seen still in place like that. Cheers.

Summit Log

Thanks Dow, for letting me know about the log. I think it is still there, it was all these year in that little metal box. I wish I could see it again. A lot of names were added in the last 60 years. In a way it is one more reward for getting to the summit. Cheers

Re: Summit Log

That was summer of 1950. My mate for climbing Edith was Bill Jarand from Quebec (he later soloclimb Mt.Assiniboine) and to Mt.Louis I went with Laurence Grassi. He climbed it more than 25 times,it was his favored, a great guy.

Re: Summit Log

Peter, you did not climb the east ridge of Lady Mac with me about 5 years ago did you? I climbed with a Peter in his 70's, super guy, don't remember his last name. Had a ton of history about the area, but lived in Canmore as I recall. There were several in the group, I soloed, we had beers afterward at the Bears Paw.

Re: Summit Log

Sorry Dow, that wasn't me. About 20 years ago I had two hip replacements and that was the end of my mountaineering. I can still enjoy the scenery from bellow and photos.
Next is gardening: www.scn.org/earth/garden/page53.htm

Louis Summit log/peter fuhrman

That was probably Peter Fuhrman
http://www.acmg.ca/03public/guides/awards.asp
He is a super guy and was head rescue guide for decades.
We spent a great time talking to him in Neil coglan hut when there to do Fay. He was with another old guy who had first ascents around the world.

Re: Louis Summit log/peter fuhrman

That is really something to see a wolf. The wardens say they are around but I haven't been lucky enough to see one since the seventies.
Peter is in his seventies, lives in canmore, super nice guy, loves to drink and has a ton of climbing history. His rescue stories are really interesting.(although some like Cleveland are tragic) Guys like Peter and Chic Scott are really worth talking to if you get the chance.
I added a couple of Louis pics from Norquay from last weekend to the Mount Louis page.

Re: Louis Summit log/peter fuhrman

He was stalking a full grown ram right in front of us, not much unlike that mountain lion making a ram kill on Lake Minnewanka two weeks ago, in front of a bunch of tourist on the lake. These predators are learning to adapt over generations to pretty much ignore us as boundries or starve.
