Mt Rainier

Mt Rainier

I took these shots from the seat of a SA 315B Lama when we were called off a forestry job on the west coast to go recover a helicopter that had crashed in Sun Valley, Idaho. We were flying down I-5 and Charlie (the pilot) made a decision to try and fly over White Pass instead of flying the long way through Portland to get to Boise. We had ground fog and were under a cloud layer that didn't look totally solid so Charlie made a max performance climb into the clouds hoping to find the ceiling and fly above this pea soup. I watched the the good old terra firma disappear and got a sick feeling in my stomach while watching the altimeter go from 6000 to 11,000 feet until we popped over the top of the clouds into brilliant sunshine. We only had visual flight equipment so this was about as risky a ride as I ever experienced in 10 years of flying. Feb 1974 Mt Rainier, Washington
