photo infovery impressive night shot... wondering if you can post some photo taking info? ie camera, tripod, exxposure...

Definitely need a tripod because the exposure is 20 seconds, on Fuji 800 film, f/2.8, 24mm lens. The camera was a Canon Rebel, with a cable release.
If you try this sort of thing, take many exposures at different settings because you never know which one will capture your image.

Re: photo infothanks... for my night shots, i like to use provia 400 slide film and then scan it. genrerally i am shooting wide open (F2.4) on a compact leica CM. works well a lot of the time, but for more detail i am going to try pushing the processing at least 1 stop next (on a separately loaded and unloaded roll).

I need to try the pushing thing. The aurora was so bright the night I took this picture that 400ISO film would have easily done it; some of my exposures were way over-exposed.
Too bad sunspot 649 finally let loose with an X2 class explosion, now that it's way over on the western limb.
What a bummer!

I've spent at least 40 nightsup in and around the Whites and never once even saw an inkling of it. Not to mention at least 200 nights at my cabin notta thing. So thanks for bringing it home!!!
Is there a time of year thats best and is it mentioned in meteorolgical forecasts?

When was this?Wow. Beautiful photo! We were wondering when you saw this (month?yr?). We saw the northern lights in VT in Sept., but can't remember the year. Great shot. Congrats.
