Northwest ridge to O' Malley Peak
Used the information on this site to determine a route up to the peak. My friend and I decided to take the Northwest Ridge. It was not incredibly difficult and a fun hike. The biggest problem we had is that the trail kept disappearing. It was easy enough to make our own way. Took almost exactly 4 hours to summit starting from the Glennalps trail head. The going was a little slow due to stopping to look for trails. We took the Ballfield back. Personally, I think the ridge was a more fun route.
I've climbed various routes up this summit on several occasions. It's a great evening or even early morning climb. I've been up the standard NW gully and W ridge including a winter climb with the MCA led by Cory Hinds.
Also, it's great fun to take the W ridge from Little O'Malley via False Peak up to the true summit.
Finally, it's part of my favorite traverses in the Front Range. Hike up to Hidden Lake, climb up the South Face of Hidden Peak and scamper over to O'Malley's summit before heading back to Glen Alps via the Ballpark. I've done that traverse as many as 5 times in a summer at least. It's super awesome!
An interesting and more technical version would be the North Face direct or via the O'Malley Falls ice climb, routes I've been itching to climb.
Going to attempt This tomorrow! Real excited, as I love the mountain. Have hiked most of these mountains in 6 short months. Trying to knock out the 36 peaks from Here to EAgle river!

Return to O'Malley
So, I finally got around to a second attempt, and in slightly less snowy, but still very cold conditions. Happy to say I made it up with no problems and was presented with views of the Chugach, Black Lake, and Denali. Excellent day climb.

Not Quite
Hiked towards O'Malley today and discovered I'm not the mountaineer I thought myself to be :) Had to play with some new crampons but by the time I got to False Peak I was exhausted. That ended up being fine, because I got to see a Dall Sheep and had a chance to glisade down from the summit of False Peak to the valley bellow. Looks like a great mountain, though!
A prominant feature behind the house, and fun place to play, with great views all around.

Many times
My first time up this peak I took my 72-year-old father, who was an inveterate peak bagger and just had to have this particular summit. Having no idea about better routes, we went to Hidden Lake and struggled directly up the scree from there--not a route I have recommended on this page ... I nearly killed the old man! I've since discovered that this can be a very pleasant mountain, provided you make a slightly more inspired route choice.

Great Hike-upFun hike-up. The snow gully up from the Ballfield can be icy. Ice axe is helpful early season.

oldtripStarted at Flat-top and just kept on until I hit the peak. Long day. Then again in 2007. Lovely spot, easy access, very satisfying.
Was living at 1412 Hyder St., working at the Second Chance.
