Old Chute Variation

Old Chute Variation

This photo shows the route pretty well. Ascend the Hogsback about 2/3 of the way up and then traverse left below the rock formations (two climbers on it). Past the last rock formation, the obvious Chute opens up above you. Ascend it (can see two more climbers in the Chute) to the ridge and follow the ridge back right to the summit. Re: Classic Hood

Great shot! I can't believe how far left that is this year. Compare it to this shot just a couple years ago. I bet it has moves 75-100'.

Hogsback 2003.

Re: Classic Hood

Yeah, I was up there about a month earlier too and it had even changed more since then.

nice!

That's the way I climbed it. It felt a little steeper, and less people go that way. Beautiful picture...

Pristine

It's almost a shame to put footprints on it.

Re: So perfect

Yeah, it was a great day. Was happy to be one of the early ones up there before the masses came.

Great job

I wonder if the shifting west of the hogsback is the result of the east winds from the persistant high pressure we've had this past month? Anyway, great shot!

Re: Great job

Thanks, Don. I have no idea what causes it but it has gotten strange the last couple of years. Would be interesting to find out though.

Clear and cold

With all the clear and cold weather watch out for the snow faceting and being like typical rocky mountain snow pack not the nice consolidated PNW snowpack. Could be dangerous after next snowfall. Did you dig a pit up there Brian?

Re: Clear and cold

No, didn't dig a pit. For the most part, the snow was styrofoam until the sun softened it. We were out of there by noon but even by then large ice chunks were falling off Crater Rock (you hear about the woman who got hit yesterday and had to be rescued?). Lower on the mountain there were seams of sugar snow mixed with hardened ice though. Several parties ascended West Crater Rim that day too which slabs off if not set up so I think the snow is fairly consolidated at least on the upper parts. We've not had much snow lately and lots of freeze/thaw cycles.
