Great shot! I can't believe how far left that is this year. Compare it to this shot just a couple years ago. I bet it has moves 75-100'.

Clear and cold

With all the clear and cold weather watch out for the snow faceting and being like typical rocky mountain snow pack not the nice consolidated PNW snowpack. Could be dangerous after next snowfall. Did you dig a pit up there Brian?

No, didn't dig a pit. For the most part, the snow was styrofoam until the sun softened it. We were out of there by noon but even by then large ice chunks were falling off Crater Rock (you hear about the woman who got hit yesterday and had to be rescued?). Lower on the mountain there were seams of sugar snow mixed with hardened ice though. Several parties ascended West Crater Rim that day too which slabs off if not set up so I think the snow is fairly consolidated at least on the upper parts. We've not had much snow lately and lots of freeze/thaw cycles.
