On descent from Krutoy Pass, Arctic Ural
Crampons off, skis on!
Krutoy (Russian for Steep) Pass is an uncharacteristically high-elevation route across the rugged highlands between the Pike Lakes. Our variation went over Shoulder 1,090 m on the South side of the col, thence along the spur ridge to the South-West. Staying on the ridges reduces avy danger, but the snow is windblasted into impenetrable crampon-quality slab up there.
