On Struska

On Struska

Descending from Struška / Baerentaler Kotchna I met this nice guy. I had a feeling that he's not really sure if it's summer yet (we have now for a half of month rain every day). July 1st, 2009.

Is that

a viper? With yellov spots on the neck it might be a grass snake, but it looks a little too thick for that too!

Re: Is that

To answer you, Ejnar, I did a short web research and found it's definitely a viper - 'vipera berus', in common language black viper. It's poisenous, but attacks only exceptionally.

When I wanted to come closer, he moved his head below a leaf, after which I wanted to remove the plant with my pole, but the smart guy escaped under a dwarf-pine.

Cheers, Vid

Re: Is that

Thanks for the identification. I've seen several of these in Austria but never knew what they were.

Great photo!
