The descent via the South Ridge is longer than it appears, requiring quite a bit of up and down climbing over towers before leaving the ridge to cross the glacier below the east face of the Monch. But the rock on the South Ridge is good granite - far better than crumbling rock on the summit and on the Mittellegi.
