One of the scarier parts on...

One of the scarier parts on the Atlantic West Ridge was this short couloir on the south side. The snow became quite hard and increasingly steep as I plunge-stepped down this one. Had it not been for my axe, I'd probably be in worse shape today. May 22, 2004.

Descent

Charles-In my route description, we descend the entire ridge rather than chance any couloir. We figured it would be steep and loose at the bottom of any couloir along this route. Your experience here confirms this. At least you had some snow, but yeah, an ice axe would certainly be a must.

Re: Descent

This wasn't much of a coulior, more of a short snowy ramp slightly off the ridge. From above, I decided to stick to snow rather than the broken rock on the ridgeline itself. Turns out to have been a bad idea!
