Nice page

After reading the book A Blistered Kind of Love I found your page very educational. I'd love to hike the entire thing, although this is not likely to happen hopefully one day I can get out there and hike part of it.
Great job!!!

Re: Nice page

Thanks. It took about 5 years for the timing to work out for me, had sold my house, some money in the bank and no job! Although I met many "serial hikers" who work like mad for 6 or 7 months and hike the rest. I'm sure I'll be back out there some day. Vic

WOW!

Great job and tons of info. Although I have no interest in torturing myself on a PCT trek, I am seriously impressed with those who do. Thanks for the page!

Re: WOW!

Thanks and your welcome. It was a great hike, looked back on fondly now, but some of it was almost torture at the time.

Thru Hiker log

Vic, This page is quite complete. How about a hiker's log like the mountain pages with summit logs? Scott (Mexico to Canada 1980)

Re: Thru Hiker log

Scott,

Great idea but it isn't an option on "Custom Pages". Do you know how I can add one? If not, I can check with the elfs and see what they say.

Thanks, Vic

Re: Thru Hiker log

Vic,
No idea how to add that to a Custom Page. If there is a mechanism it might be of interest to a few other page authors. It just appears automatically on a mountain page's format.

Re: Thru Hiker log

There is now a Thru Hiker's log for the PCT page. There is a hot link to it in the 2nd paragraph. Vic

Update Needed

After spending much of the summer following the PCT and making root beer floats for the hikers at road crossings, I realized that much has changed since I hiked 8 years ago. For one thing, smartphones! Most hikers now carry them, complete with maps and guides. The 2 most popular are Halfmile's PCT app (free) and Guthooks app (pay). Of course solar chargers are needed to keep them charged. There were about 300 thru hiker permits issued in 2006, over 1500 this year, so a lot more people on the trail! The gear is constantly getting better, lighter and more expensive. Another big change is Facebook. That is how most hikers communicate now, even on the trail. There is a general PCT page and a special page for each year's hikers, as in 'PCT Class of 2014' for this year. In general PCTA.org will provide most current information, or links to it.
