Packing My Haul Bag in Yosemite, early 1970s

Camp 4, Yosemite Valley, early 1970s. At that time there were no camp sites, or a real parking lot. Camp 4 was, and still is, known as the campground for rock climbers. We all felt that the park service wanted to keep us out of sight. I guess they didn't want a whole bunch of long hair, dusty and unshaven, climbers to be seen by the clean-cut tourists; it would have been bad for business.

Re: Herbie rules!

Thank you very much, Charles. I wish I could have kept the little car. It would have been a museum piece.
cheers, Marc

VW Bug

Nice shot. My first car was a 1973 VW Beetle. Sold it out in LA for a thousand bucks in the 1983. Was in Yosemite in the 60's and 70's with my parents. Good memories!

Re: VW Bug

Thanks Woodswalker. My Bug was already old when I bought it in the early 70s. But, that poor thing took me everywhere I wanted to go. When I sold mine it paid only enough to buy insurance for my new car. Like you said, "Good Memories!"

VW Bug Camping...

Great shot. Owned a number of them (usually just to keep one running) and camped out of them a lot. Even took out the rear and passenger seats decked the interior in plywood and custom cut a pad for diagonal sleeping for the relief driver.

Re: VW Bug Camping...

Great story Foster! Thanks.
No, for me this was my only bug. That's only because my old climbing buddy was a VW mechanic, as well as being a chemist, who could keep it running and trouble shoot on the road.

Count me in!

My first car was a VW Beetle which I bought in the early 70's. It had a '65 body on a '64 chassis (or vice-versa... I've since forgotten). Its best feature was a sunroof (that didn't leak!). An excellent vehicle! I wish I still had it, but I traded it in when I bought a VW Bus in '76. (Wish I still had that one, too! :-) )

Re: Count me in!

Hi Gordon, This VW bug took me all over the place. Like you, I wish I still had mine too. I regret to say that when I sold it on the side of the street off of a hand written "for sale" sign, it was barely enough to pay for the insurance for my next car.
