Panoramic view over the Falzarego pass and beyond from the south arete of Sass de Stria

Centered on the southeast, this panorama spans almost 180°. The rocks at either side are in fact real close: they are all part of Sass de Stria, the mountain Jan and I are climbing. The rock on the left is only jutting out; the road way down suddenly seems to stop, blocked by the rock, but is in fact far away and simply continues behind it. The large parking area is at the Falzarego pass (2105m). It's there because the area attracts a lot of visitors, and it's also the base station of the cable car that takes people up Lagazuoi (not visible in this photo because Sass de Stria is in the way - otherwise it would be further left). Seemingly attached to Sass de Stria on the left, with just a few clouds (and with a little bit of fresh snow on its highest ledges), is Tofana de Rozes (3225m). Well behind the Falzarego pass is the massif of Sorapis (3205m). Closer by, the small but striking peak in the center is Averau (2549m); about the same distance but a little bit to the left lies the even smaller looking Cinque Torri (2361m). The dark ridge between them is actually higher, but further away, culminating in Cima Ambrizolla (2715m). Monte Pelmo (3168m) is the distant dark shape on the horizon just right of center. And finally, still more to the right, comes Civetta (3220m). The top is in clouds, but it still sticks out above the much closer green summit of Monte Pore (2405m). 2 Aug 2016.
