5 dead on Mt Elbrus

by Alpinist » Fri Sep 24, 2021 4:30 pm

"Five climbers died after getting caught in a snowstorm while on the highest mountain in Europe, Russia's Mount Elbrus.

Fourteen other members of the group were rescued in strong winds and low visibility amid temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on September 24.

Eleven of the survivors were taken to hospital.

The September 23 incident occurred when the 19 climbers were at an altitude of over 5,000 meters."

A lot of people underestimate Elbrus. It's a straightforward ascent in good weather, but the weather can be extremely harsh, especially outside the July and August time period.

When I read such news, I start to feel depressed and demotivated. I adore climbing and dream to climb Elbrus one day, but the danger stops me. It's a pity that these talented people finished their lives this way...
