Arm Span to height

by RayMondo » Mon Jan 18, 2010 12:39 am

So I came across this image on the Site. Someone really bridging with both legs and arms maxed out. Then I realised it's not the same for me, as I seemingly have an inordinate arm span compared to my height.

Some years ago I discussed this with some buddies of mine. No matter who I measured, the most I've seen is +2" over height. However, my arm span is 6' 2", with a height of 5' 10". +4". Ahem, which seems to place me in the realm of Oran Utans. Though it's gotten me out of a fix many times.

Anyone else got a similar excess?

It's interesting, though I'd actually never thought to apply it to climbing - span, or "reach" - has always been kind of a boxing thing in my mind. Some of the more successful fighters, like Lennox Lewis, had reaches that far exceeded their height. My reach v. height is only a 2" increase, which is probably why I was such a mediocre boxer.

Works well for someone who's spinal discs have deteriorated, causing them to shrink while keeping the same arm span.

Ray, I am about the same as you in this regard. I am 6' 3" with an armspan of just shy of 6'8". It always helped my competitive swimming, and does help me when climbing. Makes it a lot easier to dunk as well haha.
Cheers,
Luke

My height: 6' 1.5"; my arm span: 6' 7". Difference of 5.5".

I verified it just now against the wall in the garage.

"Ooooh ooooh ooooh!"

Similar measurements. It came in very handy in my boxing days.

Jeepers, we alls been doing a lot of hanging around. This is begining to look like the missing link. Why, then I'd better go stretch myself some more. :)

Some of the gals are sure gonna get a shock when they wake up next to their male.

Well that Da Vinci link just goes to show that we are born climbers. Thought there would be some stats on it somewhere. Thanks.

Yeah, I have a +5" ape index and at 6' 2" can reach a long ways. Cloths, as mentioned, can be a problem.

My dimensions are 72-inch height and 75.5-inch wingspan. It was 30+ years and 30 pounds ago that I could just barely almost dunk a basketball if the rim was bent down an inch or so.

There are a couple people in the NBA who have very large "wingspans," as they're called. Kevin Durant is 6'9" and has a 7'5" wingspan I think.
