Bernese Oberland PD routes?

by AKM » Fri Mar 14, 2008 9:51 pm

I'm planning on going to the Bernese Oberland region for about a week this August. Can anyone suggest some good areas or routes at the PD / D grade for me to look into? Any other random advice is always appreciated! - Cheers.

For the sake of conversation how about some good climbs in both grades in Bernese Oberland. A few D and a few PD.

The only D - tour I have done in the Berner Oberland was the Mittellegigrat on the Eiger and it was a great route; very exposed and exhilirating. Rock climbing up to III and a fantastic finish on a knife-edge snowcrest leading to the small summit.
Go down the South Ridge though. We opted for the West flank and had 7 hours of taught nerves; bit of an epic!

The Mittellegihut is also very nice; great people, stunning location and the approach is AD, interesting eh?

Don't know any PD routes in BO yet! Did the Oberaarhorn which is F and found it boring; the long slog up to the hut takes much, much more time than the entire climb. Nice view though.

One of my most joyful tours was a Mönch-traverse. :D :D :D

The exceedance: Morgenhorn 3623m - Wyssi Frau 3650m - Blüemlisalphorn 3661m is a classic "in firn"

The exceedance of Eiger 3970m (Mittellegi up, west down) a classic "in rock"

Eiger is a S (D) and Blüemlisalp traverse a ZS+ (AD+)
