Chamonix to Zermatt ideas....

by hikerdd » Fri Jun 12, 2009 5:44 pm

I leave for Alps next week and will be with friends climbing Mont Blanc for 1st week, hanging out in Chamonix.

Then my plan was to hang with one of my friends and work my way over to Zermatt for a climb of the Matterhorn..

Was hoping to hike some of the Haute Rte --more scenic sections over to Zermatt.. Now my friend is kind of leaving me solo and was wondering what would be my best area to hike solo and get over to Zermatt...will have about 6-7 days to get to zermatt.

Love to rock climb if I find someone to climb with along the way too.. or any other suggestions of places along the way or villages to visit!!

Thanks for any input!!

6 or 7 days will do it. I would suggest you stay away from the true 'haute route' which crosses glaciers which is really something you do not want to do on your own.

Check out this page 'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haute_Route' or this one

http://www.distantjourneys.com/travel-s ... haute.html

http://sabegg.googlepages.com/walker'shauteroute

which describe the non glacier route for just hiking.

and of course our very on page on it

http://www.summitpost.org/route/496424/ ... rmatt.html

Of course you know this is normally a winter ski route I doubt many people do it in summer if at all you may get some funny looks.

You would also be advinded to get you Amreican Alpine Club membership up to date as staying in huts without a UIAA card is very costly. You could camp the route as well but that would take longer than 7 days
