Misha wrote:Is anybody here using digital SLR cameras in the backcountry? I am getting close to dish out some major dough for the newest Nikon D70 with a DX Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G lense, and I am curious if anybody here used cameras like Canon 10D, Canon Digital Rebel 300D, Canon D60, Nikon D100/D1H/D1, or Fuji S1/S2 Pro. I am worried about their durability and quality in tough mountain conditions (moisture, cold temperature, very strong sunlight, etc.).

Any thoughts/advice would be helpful. Thx!

I'm closing in on 3 years and 100 backcounty trips with my Pentex +ist DS. Any photos I have posted on this site came from that camera.

What's that :?:

The pop up flash that is integrated into the camera on top of the view finder. I don't know how easy this would be to fix if the flash light bulp is dead.

I am not familiar with Konicas flash, but I would get one that is compatible with Konica and potentially the Sony alpha series (should you end up getting a Sony Alpha later that can still use your current lenses).

Carbo, as Konica-Minolda Maxxum 5D is no more sold here I don't know if they'd fix the flash unit though it's still under guarantee. What do you all think :?:

Sorry I was a bit preoccupied with the fires here. If it is still under warranty then contact the manufacturer and ask where to send it (they should repair it for free, if not ask for a price). They likely still have the parts needed for repair.

Today I've ordered to repair the flash unit, guarantee doesn't exist for them. They said it has some notches on it though they haven't tried to take any pic. Even he checked my camera without raising the flash :?

Different 5D, Diego... The one from Canon :)
I love the camera but I am sick and tired of cleaning that sensor from dust specks. I can't wait for Canon to finally release a replacement with automated sensor dust cleaning

Damn it is that bad? I wonder if they will announce a replacement early next year. Maybe better sealing is needed too (Btw, not sure how great automated sensor dust cleaning is either http://members.aol.com/bhilton665/tests/dust_400d/)

Dust cleaning works great on the Olympus E-1 (and it should be excellent on the new E-3 too). Of course those bodies and lenses are sealed against water too so that also helps.

As far as I remember, Olympus was the first to implement this technology. I thought that they had a patent for it too. Not sure what exactly Canon and Nikon are doing under the hood.

Carbo - it is bad on 5D. I am cleaning sensor after I change lenses a few times. It sucks and is pretty invasive. My Rocket Blower only goes that far so I have to resort to the Copperhill Method which makes my hands tremble every time I touch that darn sensor

I guess bigger sensor seems to attract more dust. Yep I understand being scarred on ruining the sensor.
