Misha-
Maybe you are right on the dpreview hold up, just wait on purchasing to things are sorted out (the problems could also be a lens or user issue).

Yes Galen did scan his pictures and did some processing, check out the gallery next time you're in Bishop. http://www.mountainlight.com/. Very nice pictures worth seeing.

I did not know that Etsuko was into video - you guys have to come up and watch Moulon Rouge - Etsuko will be amazed at the editing on that movie!

Craig,
Yeah, Etsuko is from CCAC (California College of Arts & Crafts, now called CCA). Her specialty is motion design which includes lots of audio and video work, as well as photography.
We are always up for spending quality time with you and Alice! In fact, Etsuko was just asking me when we get to see you guys again. Shall we take this subject over email?

New D70 review is out:

Yep! I read it this morning. Sounds like a winner!
I will probably buy it in the next few weeks, just in time for the climbing season. Are you going to buy it?

Maybe, I got a F100 a few years ago and can't get myself to blow $1000 again right now. But since I have some Nikon lenses, I might have to find an excuse to spend some $ again :-) (the D70 is my first choice)

Reviving the thread...
After months of research and consideration I finally took the plunge and bought Canon 20D with good wide angle glass (Canon 17-40mm L). Stuff should be here this Friday, just in time for San Francisco Halloween festivities. Anybody else here acquired new dSLRs recently? Share your experiences!

Congrats on the new dSLR. So what made you choose Canon 20D over say Nikon D70?
We got a small point and shoot Canon (s410) this summer and I am fairly impressed by the little toy.

So what made you choose Canon 20D over say Nikon D70?

A number of reasons. Two main ones:
- Higher noise in low ISO, especially with blue sky. Since blue sky is what we get in the Sierra, having clean shots ready for large prints is very important for me. Also, D70 starts with ISO200 where 20D starts with ISO100
- Glass. While Nikon has awesome lenses, they are a lot more expensive than Canon. At the same time, Canon produces very capable lenses, very close in quality to Nikon.
So even though the 20D body costs more ($1.5K vs. $1K), I should be able to save on glass in the long run.

I ruled out D70 a while ago. Lately my selection was narrowed down to 20D vs Fuji S3 Pro. Fuji is known for their super high-quality CCD and lousy ergonomics/body design. It seems that the upcoming S3 Pro camera addresses some of the concerns. I was very seriously considering it until about a week ago when Fuji announced its market price - $2.5K for the body only... OUCH! This combined with expensive Nikon glass will translate into about $4K+ for the initial setup. I just can't justify that kind of price if I don't make money on it (yet). However, if you can afford it, it could be a really awesome camera for landscapes. One feature says it all - this camera has Fuji Velvia film (as well as other Fuji film types) simulation mode!!

Thanks for the update. Makes me wonder if Nikon got a new camera coming out to keep up with the competition.
Enjoy your new purchase (don't just love how camera gear makes climbing equipment prices seem reasonable).
There is a lunar eclipse tonight to take some nice pics of.

Too bad I won't have my new camera until Friday. I think that Nikon will release D200 pretty soon, priced in the same range as 20D. And D70 is still a very capable camera, just slightly worse than 20D :)

There is also the new Konica Minolta DSLR out, for $1.5K. So if anybody here has Minolta glass (Diego, didn't you have it?) they now have an option to use it with digital

We have so much rain down here that I don't think we will see the eclipse anyway
