Denver Residents, Please Help Us With Mountain Temperatures

by sopwith21 » Fri Jul 05, 2019 9:31 pm

Doing Bierstadt and Evans in mid-July. Standard routes. I'm packing clothing now and appreciate any help.

What are the daytime temperature extremes that we should expect on July 14-17? Upper 40s (F) to upper 60s, with a thunderstorm possibility every afternoon? Is there any chance of anything more severe?

This is only my third time climbing in the Rockies so any advice from locals is gratefully received. Thanks!

The average will be mid to upper 40's in the afternoon and low 30's at night, but of course temperatures can vary from average. I'd worry more about rain/snow/thunderstorms than temperatures. It helps to get an early start, but this is not a guarantee.

Temperatures never reach the upper 60's on Mt Evans. 65 is the all time record high, but anything over 60 is extremely rare. Yes, there is a chance of a severe thunderstorm up there, but just use common sense and try to get as early start as possible. Turn back if big anvil clouds are forming. Thunderstorms do occur on most afternoons and sometimes other times of the day as well.

These are pretty civilized mountains with no really unusual dangers, but keep an eye on the weather.

Thank you, that's exactly what we needed. Sounds like it will be a touch cooler than what we anticipated. And yes, we are planning on an early start. Hope to start our descent around 1-2 pm so as to be off the high points for the afternoon storms. Thanks again!
