fox in Rainer NP

by TLP » Mon Jun 21, 2010 5:40 pm

Hey I saw this guy by the road on the drive up to Paradise. Does anyone know if this is a fox specific to the NW, or is it just an ordinary fox? Is it normal to see these guys out and about? Thanks.

Thats a kit fox isnt it? Looks like the kit fox I saw at the High Desert Museum in Bend last summer.

I am not sure... I thought kit foxes have a black tip on their tails.

Red Fox
"Long, bushy tail with white tip. Prominent pointed ears. Backs of ears, lower legs, and feet black. Color variations include a red phase, black phase (almost completely black), a silver phase (black with silver-tipped hairs), a cross phase (reddish brown with a dark cross across shoulders), and intermediate phases; all have white-tipped tail."

Kit Fox is smaller, lighter colored, has a black tipped tail, and big ears.

My wife and I were staying at Paradise Lodge on the nights of 4 & 5 June. I was looking out the window just before dinner on one of those evenings when I noticed a fox very similar to the one in your photo resting in the snow below our room. I'm pretty sure it was the same day that the choppers were dealing with the avalanche victim search.
