NORTH BEND, Wash. – The fourth annual Si of Relief Climb for Time is set for Sunday, April 22 on Mount Si just outside of North Bend, Wash. and race organizers want you to get "Si"ched!

The four-mile, 3,000 vertical-foot sprint-climb of the popular Cascade foothills hiking trail, some 30 miles east of Seattle, is billed as Washington state's most challenging sprint climb. The race gets underway at 9:30 a.m. and takes climbers to the base of the 4,167-foot peak's first scramble.

In 2017, Arlo Siemsen of Redmond set a new Si of Relief climb record on the way to capturing the overall title, reaching the finish in 57 minutes. The 25-year-old shaved 3 minutes and 45 seconds off of the event's previous record of 1:00:45 set in 2015 by Peter Erickson of Seattle.

Last year's women’s winner Toni Carlstrom of Redmond was second overall. The 23-year-old reached the finished just 7 minutes back with a women’s record 1:04:0.

In 2018, runners are entered from throughout the Puget Sound region and as far east as Charleston, S.C. for the annual trail running competition for time.

The climb begins with a mass start at 9:30 a.m. at the trail head next to the Mount Si parking lot with competitors keeping their own time and reporting on the honor system at the event finish.

The climb is free and open to all levels of hikers and climbers. There is no pre-race registration, climbers can just show up and climb.

FWIW, my PR is 45 minutes, and I know folks who have done it much quicker.

Exactly where is the start and finish?

Is the finish the tippity top?

The race announcement quotes 4 miles and 3,000 feet of vertical with a "mass start ... at the trail head next to the Mount Si parking lot", which would put the finish in the basin below the Haystack.

Finishing at the top of the Haystack would be about 3,600 feet vertical. People fall off the Haystack and die on occasion. I cannot imagine a race to the top of an 800 foot summit pyramid requiring exposed 3rd class scrambling. The liability would be too much.
