German movie: "Nordwand"

by mvs » Tue Nov 04, 2008 9:26 pm

I saw this new movie last week. It was amazing. It told the story of the 1936 Kurtz/Hinterstoisser tragedy on the Eiger. Some liberties were taken with the story, but not in the typical Hollywood way which makes all climbers roll their eyes.

The mountain scenery was great, the feeling of multi-pitch rock climbing, and then more alpine stuff was spot on, and when disaster strikes, it's truly harrowing.

Can't recommend it enough. But don't take your significant other if he or she is worried about climbing! :)

It definitely looks great! I can only hope it gets a NA release. Anybody know if it is going to be released in the US?

This looks like a pretty cool film. I saw the trailer a couple of times and it had some decent climbing scenes. Hope the story is close to the original. The US release date is Dec. 12th.

Just wondering where you found that info. Been looking around for it, but am having no luck.

It's well done but I would have liked it better had it focused more on the actual climbing story, too much side plot for my taste. The actual "disaster" story falls a bit short. Still worth seeing though, it's a well done movie for sure.

The movie is good.

But I was a little bit disappointed about this movie. Both leading actors are originally not character-actors, more or less comedy-actors...

The last words of Kurz "Ich kann nicht mehr!" (I can no longer...) are missing in the movie.

I can recommend also a new and very good book about the Eiger history. This book of Rainer Rettner is much better than the one of Daniel Anker.

I saw it just after Joe Simpson's version of the same story (The Beckoning Silence), and I was very disappointed as a consequence, as this movie takes really too many liberties with the story and doesn't show nearly enough climbing.
