Mr Leghorn since it seems that you climb Humphrey's everyday perhaps you can assist me. I am planning a trip sometime next year to Sedona with my wife to utilize my in laws timeshare. I would like to climb Humphrey's while I'm there. Living in NY its nice to get out of cold when do you think the best time off year would be to maximize 1)pleasant Sedona weather 2) decent hiking weather on Humphrey's and 3) escaping less appealing weather in NYC. It seems May would be best but then I read that winds can be awful, what to do?

Since I'll be in Sedona for a week with no concrete plans other than having fun/relaxing if I do go in spring i may be able to pick and choose best day if there is way to check wind forecasts.

I haven't been to AZ in like 6 years so I'll be happy to back no matter what.

Enjoyed Humphreys, Sedona, and a some of the rest of Arizona in August two summers ago. August was awesome for Humphreys, Flagstaff and the rim of the canyon but HOT for Sedona (105F). I agree with Mr. Leghorn about shooting for a cooler month to best enjoy both. Based upon my experience serious advice for summer climbs on Humphreys is to start as early as possible, even if there is no threat of storms. I left the Snowbowl parking lot at dawn on a Sunday morning and had the summit to myself on a beautiful clear morning. However, on my way back down there were well over 100 people heading up the trail the other way.

April, even with a fairly dry winter is probably iffy advise for someone planning a trip out-of-state. In dry years we tend to get the most snow in March (with 10-14" of snow possible/probable in town and more up on the mountain). If it ends up being a typical winter, expect it to hold significant snow in April, since we often ski into April). If you want dry conditions and decent weather in Sedona definately think about September.

PS: If you live in Flag, its easy to do, since I'll often ski up before work and get a ski run before work, conditions permitting.

I'll be passing thru Flag next week, was wondering if anyone has any current conditions reports. I will have skis (AT), not sure about timing yet, if anyone wants to play.
