Music Wanted for Mountaineering Videos

by Josh Lewis » Mon Jun 18, 2012 1:54 am

I'm going to be very busy this summer climbing all sorts of peaks which means I'm going to want to get a few good videos in. But I admit that I could use some help in the music department with some good music/songs. (preferably no lyrics unless it fits well) I've seen many climbing professional videos which I want to at least try to make some decent ones. 8)

As for some examples here are a few of what I'm some what looking for:

And this one:

In the end, it's your own preference ... being that everybody's taste buds are different.

Are you looking at classic rock ? I always enjoyed some of the upbeat stuff that Deborah Harry did in the early eighties ..

(of course, she's realistically old enough to be your grandmother ... but, what a grandmother ! .....

On the subject of Classic Rock ... the group "The Alan Parson's Project" put out a mind-bending kaleidoscope of awesome tunes back in the late eighties ...

here's just one of them ..

I don't know your personal musical taste, but here are some songs I would like to use if I was making a video or slideshow about mountaineering:

Mahavishnu Orchestra:

Ulrich Schnauss & Mark Peters

Sigur Ros:

I'm not sure why I can't post the last video, but there's the link. I hope you like some of the songs!

So I edited the original post to give people a better understanding of my tastes which can be seen in the examples.

@ Larry: Good question. Personally I like classic rock, but as I said in the post that I'm trying to go without lyrics (unless they match the mood).

@ Kerstin: "The Messiah Is Falling" has a good tone. Thanks. 8)

Josh,

Not 'classic' rock, I guess this is a form of rock

All my mates that aren't into this kind of music (including my wife) think I'm nuts for listening to "death metal" (as they all call it - although its far from).

Although most of you all will probably think I'm a loony, this bit of music I've always wanted to put to a climbing clip. The climb would have to be gnarly in blizzard conditions though to fit to the music :) (although there is a quieter section towards the end where you can include a few scenic shots at a break in the blizzard etc etc.......)

An instrumental ?

TWO come to mind right away ... "Frankenstein" (if you did a Halloween assent") and "Percolator" if you're like me and happen to drink (at least)
three cups of steaming hot coffee per day ..

... and, I'm not talkin' 'bout Starbucks ... :!:

I remember really getting into "techno" music and decorating a video of the climb of Mt. Redoubt North Face with that music. My heart broke when I played the video at a pub in Seattle and found out my hero Jim Nelson was covering his ears, emitting an audible "thank god" when the music stopped :D.

Yep, music is very personal!

I don't know a whole lot outside of classic rock and blues. There are lots of instrumentals out there in that realm, but not many come to mind that have a vibe similar to what you shared. In honor of summer:

In a mainstream, modern direction,Trent Reznor has done some soundtrack work recently (Girl with the Dragon Tatoo & The Social Network). Most of the instrumentals have a quieter feeling than these two more familiar tracks, but seem darker than your taste:

Josh, this is fun and all, but you might get a larger amount of results and speed things up  by entering the songs you already know you like into Pandora. Of course, that would only inform you about what you like. BTW, nice mountain videos.

If the summit was obscured by mist and fog, THIS tune might be more appropriate for the party descending the glacier and promising a future attempt ..
