When the JMT was just 3 years old!

Here's a wild vintage film to check out this week. Shot in 1941 by adventure filmmaker William Albee, it shows he and his family on a three month trek along the legendary trail.

Super interesting to watch.

When do you think through hikers will be getting on the JMT this summer?

Introducing GISsurfer web map - Replacement for Gmap4

I shut Gmap4 down about a year ago when Google slashed the amount of free usage it allowed for its map API (Application Program Interface). Since that time I have been building a web map called GISsurfer which is based on the free open-source Leaflet map API. This is a public service project and part of my way to “pay it forward”.

GISsurfer default map of the world:

Possibly useful scrambling guidebook

I think this is the appropriate forum...

I just published Forty Classic Scrambles of North America, a guidebook that contains what it says on the cover. It's based on the decade or so I have spent scrambling all over western North America, from southern Arizona to the northern Canadian Rockies, and contains descriptions, history, and photos for some quality climbs between class 3 and 5.7. If you're interested, check it out at http://drdirtbag.com/scrambles/; if not, ...

Learning to ski

I'm in AZ... I hardly know what snow is...

Okay that is not 100% true, I have been in snow a fair bit, I have snowboarded a bit and skied a couple times. Frankly I hate resorts, I dislike paying to go to them and dislike the idea of them. Are they my only option to learning to be a better skier? Can I just take trips into the backcountry and slowly learn? I am ...

Anatomy of a Weekend

Hi guys, this week I’ve been thinking about what makes up a weekend of adventure: patterns, consistencies, predictable emotions, etc.

I wrote about it here.
Http://www.foodwaterattention.com/feed/ ... -a-weekend

What makes up a weekend for you, no matter the adventure, near or far? I’d love to hear from everyone!

Assessment and selection of the weather forecast provider Assessment and selection of the weather forecast provider

How do we approach this? The situation is very different if you want to climb in the European Alps and when you are going to remote part of the Andes or Tajikistan.

I have read an article in the past explaining how different weather forecast providers use different approaches and techniques to provide forecast for specific regions and altitudes. It mentioned that some were not accurate enough (grid density etc) and therefore high risk to ...
