packing tents

by pitney » Thu Nov 04, 2010 6:28 pm

Hello -

Try this trick for getting your tent back in the bag. Instead of rolling everything up together, roll each part separately (fly, body, poles) and put each in the bag. It now fits! The only reason I can think of is that air is not trapped in the big roll.

Wow wait a second..seriously now.
I feel a bit stupid right now asking this, you pack your tent like you do with your sleeping bag?
Just pushing it all the way to the stuff bag? Isn't that bad for the textiles, in means that creates many little folds? Isn't there any problem?
I' ve been backpacking for years and I feel that I'm learning something new here..

My wife and I spent 45 minutes trying to get it snug in the bag..

A lot depends on how you hold your mouth when you're doin' it.

I've been told that this is actually better for the fabric, as you don't end up folding it in the same place every time.

I've been stuffing my tents for years and never had any issues. I usually take my tent (obviously without the poles), any spare clothing, shell jacket, etc. and put it all in a compression stuff sack. Then compress the hell out of it. You'd be surprised how much space this opens up in your pack. Never had any issues with it.

I usually have Fort Mental and The Chief take turns packing my tent and carrying my pack for me on all my trips. :)

Pitney, have you ever pitched or taken down your tent in a storm/wind/rain? Sounds like you haven't - if your tent packed altogether like that, it's very inefficient. I usually stuff the fly first, then the body of the tent and then the poles. This way, a) I don't lose everything in case of gusty winds; b) I can set my tent up very quickly with minimal rain damage to it. And yeah, I was taught to stuff it so the waterproofness doesn't wear out on repeated creases from folding.

...because you're carrying 3 cases of beer.

I thought those guys used Sherpas to carry all that stuff or are their guides carrying it?

Stuffing the tent is recommended. If you think about the abuse the tent is designed to take with the elements, stuffing it for a 1-15 day trip isn’t going to do any damage to the tent, if it does you have a piece of crap.

The whole object of stuffing versus rolling is that you won’t create "wear" patterns in the fabric.

All my best,

Steve

P.S. Why is everybody using the forums as their own PnP? Please keep the sewage off SP guys, it’s ok to be passionate about something but to just go off on one another is a waist of the other 10,000 folks on SP.
