Peaks recommendation near SLC?

by sm0421 » Mon Jan 13, 2014 3:35 pm

Hi, I'm heading over to Salt Lake City in late March and I'd like to go out to do some hikes with my wife near SLC.

What are some day-hike options that are within 2 hours drive of SLC, not too difficult and has great views? We have all the winter hiking gears.

Thanks,
Alex

I don't reside in Utah, but I was up there during the Holidays attending a funeral service.

Here's my top four for that particular area ...

(1) Antelope Island
(2) Stansbury Island
(3) Big Beacon - Mt. Wire
(4) Mt. Olympus

If you have winter hiking gear, the scenery on the route to Red Pine Lake is hard to beat that time of year.

The above 4 are pretty good as well.

Moderate Peaks really close to SLC for moderate hikers...I recommend in order of difficulty: Granduer (easiest), Mt. Aire and Gobbler's Knob. All of those are a couple of hours, non-technical and have great views. In March they will all have snow.

For non-snow hikes in March, try Meridian via Ensign or ones on Antelope Island...both of those areas are treeless, non-technical, and have great veiws of the Wasatch front.

I'd cast another vote for Mount Olympus. Easy access. Amazing views.
