Avalanche Deaths in Japan Are Reminder!

by Murph1 » Mon Mar 27, 2017 5:58 pm

The death of fifteen student climbers and one instructor in the
mountains near Tokyo should be a reminder to Northwest Climbers,
Skiiers, Snowshoers, and Snowmobilers than the "Mountains Don't
Care" isn't just a set of cute words some fireside writer came up with.
Ignoring Avalanche Warnings anywhere in the World is a sure way to
create the circumstances for a tragedy. The loss of multiple lives
on Mt Hood and Mt St. Helens involving large student outings in years
gone by should remind us all that "Numbers" is no quarantee of safety
in avalanche country. Particularly in the Northwest, changing snow
conditions occur quickly, and all parties venturing out in non monitored
slopes in the Cascades, and Olympics should be trained in avalanche
evaluation and rescue techniques. They should carry proper equipment
and remember that no matter how strong your party is an avalanche
can end your outing just as fast as a beginner!
Stay safe! Listen to what the conditions are telling you and act
accordingly.
