Orizaba South Route

by VWLover » Mon Aug 28, 2017 6:41 am

I'm considering trying Orizaba's south route this November and I'm looking for some beta. I haven't found much on SP or through my own searches so I'm hoping people can lend a hand. The key will be finding a ride to the hut from either El Ciudad Serdan or Atzinzitla (or somewhere else) and back. I plan on taking a bus from Mexico City to Puebla and then Puebla to whichever town/city offers the best option to get to Fausto Gonzales Hut.

Would love to hear from folks who've done the south route and would appreciate any info you have. My plan is to leave on 13 November from Boise to Mexico City and fly back on 21 November so if anyone would like to join me I'd welcome the company. I will need to be back in Mexico City by Sunday the 19th since I'm going to the Patriots/Raiders game. Other than that, I'm fairly flexible. Muchas gracias!

We did the south route, though we had a rental car to ease the logistics. A car is pretty affordable if you can split it 2-3 ways, and it's nice to have a place to stash your stuff. The hut is kind of a dump, and only accessible to high-clearance vehicles. If I were you, I'd start at the saddle with Sierra Negra and hike from there, since pretty much any car can get that far.
