I may well be overreacting, but yesterday I happened to notice someone had logged an ascent of Granite Peak in the Dugway Range on Peakbagger, the first ascent logged on any climbing site I know of. Coincidentally, I noticed that the gray shading indicating military land on Google Maps that had previously covered Granite Peak was considerably smaller. Does this mean that Granite Peak is open for business? If anyone has any information please speak up, this is killing me
Very interesting! I just sent him a pm via peakbagger. What's odd is that looking at his list of peaks he doesn't seem to be a big prominence bagger. This is all third hand, but rumor has it that even someone who did some work on the base was denied access because of the danger of encountering unexploded ordnance.
Very strange. It wouldn't make much sense for someone who's not a hardcore prominence peakbagger to have any interest in the peak at all, let alone risk life and limb to stealth it. And yet I would have expected to see a lot of rejoicing and a plethora of trip reports from the Utah peakbagging community if they really had opened the peak to the public, which I haven't. I checked all the relevant forums in the index and no one has said anything.
