Split Mountain Peak in June

by fernandoe@yahoo.com » Wed Apr 10, 2019 5:01 pm

Hi, I am looking to go up something significant early in the season. I am looking at Split Mountain on June 15. I am wondering about the approach by car. I have a 4WD Subaru, but it is not high off the ground. Are there stream crossings by car; and given the snow this year will these crossings be treacherous?

Fernandoe,
I haven't been past McMurray Meadows turnout this year so no first hand info on conditions after that. Someone with that experience may chime in. There are no stream crossings that would normally bother you in your Subaru. Right now the runoff really isn't much above normal (projected to increase) so unless that little section after McMurray Meadows got some big ruts in it I think you will be fine. I recognize others use the route from Tinemaha Campground and conditions may be different on that route.

There aren't any significant stream crossings, but rocks will be a bigger problem than water. If you're careful, you should be able to get a Subaru to the trailhead if the road hasn't deteriorated much in the last few years.
