I took the train both ways from Oyantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, but I honestly can't think of a reason Peru Rail (http://www.perurail.com/web/tper/tper_a2a_home.jsp) wouldn't let you take the train just one-way. Their website even allows for one-way bookings.

PS: Beware the guy in native garb waking you up with his dance and fashion show on the train. ;)

Here's some more infor from Peru Treks (includes pricing, great map, etc.): http://www.perutreks.com/machu-picchu-b ... 1-day.html

Have fun!

Hi Snow,

Check out my new page on hiking to Machu Picchu via Choquequirao, and the attached Trip Report. http://www.summitpost.org/route/469333/choquequirao-machu-picchu-trek.html There is also a link on there to Perurail and yes you can take the train just one way. As Sarah said, you can buy your tickets online but you still have to go to the train station and change the voucher for the real ticket. If you want to do the regular Inca Trail you have to go with a group and licensed guide, they provide water. There are a few alternate routes, there is a map on my page. Peru Treks is no longer offering the Salkantay trek because of the $45 fee to enter the trail, but you can still do it on your own. There is lots of water available now, as it is the start of the rainy season. Also lots of camps, and if you are on one of the alternate trails, you can camp almost anywhere. I'll be happy to try to answer any other questions you might have. Vic
