I'd like to propose President's Day weekend for the winter SPMW gathering. It's a 3-day weekend for most of us, which means we won't have to burn a vacation day. There is also a new moon on Feb 15th. If the skies are clear, there'll be some awesome star gazing at night. If we're really lucky, we may just see the northern lights.

I know the 14th is Valentine's Day but hell, I'm engaged to be married next year and if I can sneak out - YOU can too!

Had a great hike and we were the first to summit that mighty mountain on Jan 1st. 2010. It was a very cold day with temps starting at -4 and falling to -6 by the end of the hike. No time to mess around with those temps so we had to keep moving. You don't need much time to cover the 7 mile round trip (we did it in about 3 1/2 hours) and the trail had been done within the past few days so route finding was a non issue. We both have MSR snowshoes (Denali Classics) and they worked well and I felt we were better off with them but you could have gone without.

There is a box at the TH to fill out the self issue permit.

lots of fresh snow on this hike.

And you can't beat an outdoor hottub to warm up after a cold day.

Beautiful pictures Tonka. I have climbed Eagle Mountain twice and paddled in the Boundary Waters 16 times, but have never been there in the winter. Looks like a great trip.

So who's in for President's Day weekend? Any takers? We need to start planning gear pretty soon, especially if we are going to do some snow camping. I'm open for either camping or just doing a day hike. Either way is fine with me...
