Puna de Atacama in March ?

by gnome » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:47 am

Hello,

I am thinking of a trip to the Puna de Atacama in March 2010 to intent a 6000m (Incahuasi, or Ojos del Salado, or Walter Penck, ...).
In your opinion is this still the right time of the year to climb in this region ? Has anyone already climb there in March ?

Thanks for your help !

Got your mail.
It's no problem to climb there in March. A bit colder of course and the storms are more frequent, but if you're lucky you'll have clear and nice autumn days. If I remember correct, I summited a peak there the 2'nd or 3'rd of April one year and it was fine.

Thank you very much Corax ! I am now looking for a partner for attempting Ojos or Incahuasi. If I can't find one, I may have the opportunity to join a local group that goes to Nacimiento.

Saludos !

for what it's worth, we're in cordoba right now preparing for a trip up to paso del san francisco and an attempt at cotahuasi - we'll probably be in fiambala on sunday - you're welcome to join us, but logistics may be tough at this point (especially if you're still in france) - if you're looking for company at las grutas, we'll be there on and off for the rest of the month - safe travels and good luck, jeff

I'll probably leave for Argentina the 2'nd of March. I'm not sure about what my plan really is yet, but I'm sure I find something interesting to do in Los Andes :D
I may shoot straight for the Puna, so we may be in the area at the same time Gnome. Let's keep in contact.
