Avoiding snowmobiles. Freel Peak area.

by Vladislav » Thu Feb 11, 2010 8:03 pm

I was considering hiking up to Freel Peak. Is the area around Horse Meadow popular with snowmobiles? I'd rather avoid them if I can.
Thanks. Vlad.

Vlad -- last time I was there (Jan. 2005) it definitely was. Around Armstrong Pass I headed up the south ridge instead, which was fun and got above the machines.

Thank you, Rob. Nice pictures!
Now I am considering to stay up high from the very beginning (through Thompson Peak). I really want to stay further away from the machines.
Is parking allowed/possible at Luther Pass or at Horse Meadow turn-off?
Vlad.

I started from the pullout near Rd 051, which I think is the usual way to get to Horse Meadow. The snowmobilers also started from there.

I haven't parked at Luther Pass, but Snowshoe Trails of Tahoe lists a trip from there up to Thompson Peak and recommends parking at a plowed pullout near the pass (a second edition of the book has been published, but I don't have it).

btw A little googling turned up this.
