Rare Adirondack avalanche catches two backcountry skiers

by ADKeditor » Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:05 pm

Two backcountry skiers were caught in an avalanche on Wright Peak over the weekend, a rarity in the Adirondacks. They were on the same slide path that avalanched in 2000. The earlier avalanche caught four skiers, killing one. It remains the only fatal avalanche in the Adirondack Mountains. The Adirondack Explorer newsmagazine ran an extensive interview with two of the survivors of the first avalanche. It is a riveting account of what it's like to be swept up and buried in a snow slide.
