While there are some kernels of truth in Gary's post, i hope most readers realize the post is pure bullshit. I'm not going to waste time with point-by-point refutal, but while there are some PCT thru-partiers, there are many more who are at one with the wilderness aspects and are very tough. Certainly ultralight gear isn't to blame. Inexperience or simply having a different set of priorities are the reasons.

FWIW, the venerable trail pioneers of the PCT in the 70s, including Eric Ryback, skipped sections because of conditions. I personally couldn't stand to completely skip (i biked around big fires in 2008), but you're kidding yourself if you think that the good old days were pure and today's hikers are as lame as Gary paints them.

You missed a subtle distinction in Gary's message. He was blaming it on AT hikers, not east coast hikers. Not all AT hikers are from the east coast, some can be included in that granola-like collection of fruit, nuts, and flakes that we call Californians.
