Own the 60L already but thought I'd give a plug for the bag, they're the best!

Sorry for the confusion. I bought the pack last fall (september) and just used it last weekend on a trip. Has probably 10 hours of use on it. So nearly new I guess.

I've done most of my alpine climbing with a BD 45L Quantum pack, but the climbs began and ended at a refuge. I've heard a lot about the ability of Cilogear's expanding and sizing down capability, so, realistically, how does a 45 and a 60L compare? Would a 45L be fine for most alpine climbing, including 2-3 day trips? Or would a 60L be pretty much required? And how about a 5 day backpacking (no climbing) trip? How would each fare? I guess I'm thinking about multiple day climbing trips, 2 day ski mountaineering trips, ~5 day backpacking trips, etc. Maybe my consideration spectrum is too broad, but I'm just curious.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. (Free bump!).

i have a 20, 30, 40b and 60...

the 40-45 liter worksacks are great 2-3 day alpine packs if your don't take the kitchen sink. the 60 is a great 5 day backpacking pack and would also work well for the 2-3 day alpine trip. I end up using my 40b for most 2+ day technical trips, but use the 60 for more of the non technical alpine stuff (walkups on rainier, ptarmigan traverse etc).

either way, they expand so much and compress down with the d-clip system so well that you could get away with either just fine.

And, this is a great deal for an awesome backpack... if I didn't have one already I'd snag it!

I think the above post hit the head on the nail. I've compared my friend's 45L side by side with my 60L and they look to be the exact same pack, except to 60L is slightly longer in depth. As mentioned, with the d-clip system, you get the same compressibility of the 60L with the added benefit of 15 extra liters when/if needed. I rarely carry enough volume to need the extra size, so am more concerned with saving the 8oz or so difference between the 45L and 60L. Hope this helps.
